When Layton Perry Black, Jr. was born on January 6, 1922, in Bloom, Ohio, his father, Layton, was 38 and his mother, Anna, was 28. He had four brothers and one sister. He served with 2nd Platoon, Company C, 1st Battalion, 502nd Parachute Regiment in the 101st Airborne Division from England through Normandy, Holland, Bastogne and Austria. Starting as a Private, he ended his military service as the last 1st Sergeant of Company C in WWII.
