Comments:

Born in Chicago, IL 16 May 1892. Graduated from Shattuck Military School in Faribault, MN in 1913. Enlisted into the Infantry in 1916. Commanded a company in the 11th MG Bn in the 4th ID in the AEF. Wounded in August 1918 and commanded a MG battalion until the end of WWI. Married in 1921. Spent the the interwar years instructing in the Infantry School and the CGSC, as well as serving as PMS at the Riverdale Academy. Promoted to BG in March 42 and served as ADC of the 9th ID. Took command of the Division as a MG in July. Landed in North Africa in Operation Torch and fought the campaign there to its end in May 1943. Led the 9th ID in the invasion of Sicily in August 43. Then sent to England to prepare for the Normandy invasion. Landed on Utah beach on 10 June 44. Promoted to command XII Corps and led them across France and during the Battle of the Bulge. After the war returned to Ft Leavenworth as Commandant of the CGSC, then commanded 7th Army. Died in Columbus, Georgia at the age of 69
