PFC Cantu was born on October 3, 1958, in Hidalgo County, Texas. He had lived in several Texas cities, including Anton, Lubbock, Pharr, and McAllen. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps on November 28, 1975. He was assigned in the CO A BLT 1/6, USS Guam. He died on January 17, 1977, at the age of 18, in the Liberty launch boat (LCM-6) accident as he was aboard. Their boat struck a freighter and capsized during the USS Trenton and USS Guam visitation in Barcelona, Spain. He is now buried in Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery, Mission, Hidalgo County, Texas, USA.
