When Gordon W. Bates was born on December 31, 1894, in Michigan, his father, Adelbert, was 39 and his mother, Lula, was 18. He had nine siblings. He enlisted in the Army on September 20, 1917. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company B, 2nd Machine Gun Battalion. He died of wounds on May 29, 1918 and is now buried in Somme American Cemetery, Bony, France. He also has a marker in Mount Hope Cemetery, Shelby, Oceana County, Michigan, USA.
