When Robert E. Bitzer was born in 1891 in Pennsylvania, his father, Jacob, was 43 and his mother, Louise, was 38. He had nine siblings. He enlisted in the Army on May 16, 1917. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Corporal in Battery A, 7th Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Infantry Division.
