When Ralph J. Carpenter was born in November 1896 in Spencer, West Virginia, his father, George, was 35 and his mother, Nancy, was 27. He had two brothers and six sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company F, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was promoted to Private First Class on Dec 17, 1917. He died of wounds on May 29, 1918 and is now buried in Charlestown Cemetery, Charlestown, Portage County, Ohio, USA.
