Paul Waples Derrickson was born on January 25, 1892. He entered the military service in Virginia. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Second Lieutenant in Company K, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was killed in action on May 28, 1918, and was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. His citation reads ""For extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, A.E.F., in the advance on Cantigny, France, 28 May 1918. Second Lieutenant Derrickson courageously went forward with his platoon and reached the position he had been directed to take. Fearlessly walking up and down his line, he cheered and directed the work of his men until he was killed."" He is now buried in Somme American Cemetery, Bony, France.
