When George Hilton Foster was born on November 7, 1901, in Yorktown, Indiana, his father, John, was 36 and his mother, Ida, was 32. He had three brothers and six sisters. He was a student at Fairmount High School when he enlisted in U.S. Regular Army on May 7, 1917 at Marion, Indiana. He was sent to Fort Thomas, Kentucky and was assigned to Company D, 38th Infantry. He embarked overseas on November 1917 and was assigned to Company A, Machine Gun Battalion, 1st Division. He was declared "Missing in Action" on June 7, 1918 and is commemorated on Tablets of the Missing, Somme American Cemetery, Bony, France.
