When Grady L. Garland was born in 1898 in Otto, North Carolina, his father, Andrew, was 26 and his mother is Elizabeth. He had two brothers and two sisters. He entered the military service in Georgia. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company L, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was declared "Missing in Action" on July 4, 1918 and is commemorated on Tablets of the Missing, Somme American Cemetery, Bony, France.
