When James Augustus Jewell was born on April 25, 1893, in Silver Plume, Colorado, his father, James, was 36 and his mother, Mary, was 27. He had two brothers and three sisters. James was engaged to Annis Hornbeck of Nevada. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private First Class in Company H, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was declared "Missing in Action" near Cantigny on June 6, 1918 and is commemorated on Tablets of the Missing, Somme American Cemetery, Bony, France. There is a cenotaph for James in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. His name is also listed on the Colorado Freedom Memorial in Aurora.
