When Melvin Theodore Johnson was born on March 7, 1893, in Minnesota, his father, Jens, was 24 and his mother, Kristi, was 28. He entered service on August 5, 1917 and arrived overseas on December 21, 1917. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in HQ Company, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. Johnson was killed in action on March 7, 1893 while fighting in the Somme region of France. He is now buried in Hawley Cemetery, Hawley, Clay County, Minnesota, USA.
