When Herbert J. Jones was born on February 5, 1893, in Dresden, Tennessee, his father, Joseph, was 35 and his mother, Ella, was 27. He had two brothers. Herbert was the first volunteer from Dresden, entering the officer's training camp at Fort Oglethorpe with the first to enter the training there. He sailed for France in the fall of 1917. He was gassed early, which took him out of the fight for several weeks. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Second Lieutenant in Battery D, 6th Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Division. He was Killed in Action on July 4, 1918 and is now buried in Sunset Cemetery, Dresden, Weakley County, Tennessee, USA.
