When William Dewey Kershaw was born on March 13, 1898, in Coffeen, Illinois, his father, John, was 42 and his mother, Cyrena, was 38. He had four brothers and five sisters. His father John Kershaw was killed in a mine accident in the Coffeen. Mrs. Kershaw sent three other boys to fight for their country. William was 20 years old when he died from his wounds on the field of battle on May 29, 1918. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company E, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. His current burial is unknown. His name is inscribed on the monument as PVT W KERSHEN.
