When Paul Henry Kuhl was born on July 21, 1894, in Manilla, Iowa, his father, Theodore, was 36 and his mother, Wilhelmina, was 32. He had four brothers and five sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company K, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division.
