Charles Edward Lanier was born on February 6, 1899. He was the eldest of his six siblings. He joined the US Army when he was 17 years old, persuaded by his parents, and left for France on January 7, 1918. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company D, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. "Private Lanier was a victim of the first mad rush of the German horde after the American troops entered the first line trenches in France," The Decatur Daily reported. A piece of shrapnel penetrated Lanier's head behind his ear on May 30, 1918. He died the next day from his wounds. He was the first soldier from Morgan County killed in World War I. He is now buried in Decatur City Cemetery, Decatur, Morgan County, Alabama, USA. His name is also commemorated in Florence Historical Board in Alabama.
