When Herbert Rinehard Lembcke was born on March 13, 1894, in Wisconsin, his father, Ludwig, was 31 and his mother, Mary, was 19. He had two brothers and four sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private First Class in Company I, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division.
