Joseph L. Lietzan was born on January 14, 1895, son of August and Anna Lietzan. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Battery E, 6th Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Division. He was Killed in Action on April 28, 1918 and is now buried in Oise-Aisne American Cemetery, Seringes-et- Nesles, France. He was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism on April 27, 1918 at Couellemelle, France. His name is inscribed on the monument as PVT J E LETZAN.
