When Frank Mattern was born in 1899 in Russia, his father, Franz, was 30 and his mother, Katherina, was 30. He had four brothers and five sisters. He entered the military service in South Dakota and served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private First Class in Company D, 3rd Machine Gun Battalion, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 21, 1918 and is now buried in Suresnes American Cemetery, Suresnes, France.
