When John B Mc Dermit was born on August 8, 1893, his father, John, was 34 and his mother, Mary, was 22. He had five brothers and three sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company A, 1st Machine Gun Battalion, 1st Infantry Division. He died from his wounds received in battle on May 24, 1918 and is now buried in Collins Cemetery, Collins, Covington County, Mississippi, USA. His name is inscribed on the Cantigny monument as PVT MCDERMOTT J B CO A.
