John Warren Humphrey was born on October 2, 1895. He enlisted in the state of Montana on July 5, 1917, and was one of the first Warren county boys to reach the battle front. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Corporal in Company E, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He did heroic service, and on several occasions distinguished himself for bravery. In one of the big battles in France he distinguished himself by rescuing a number of his comrades at the risk of his own life, and for this won a medal of honor from the French War Staff. He was Killed in Action on July 18, 1918 and is now buried in Warrenton City Cemetery, Warrenton, Warren County, Missouri, USA.

His name is inscribed on the Cantigny monument as PVT J W HUMPHREYS. Also, he is commemorated on a monument located in Buzancy, France.
