When Joseph Moriarty was born on November 15, 1892, in Holyoke, Massachusetts, his father, Cornelius, was 53 and his mother, Honora, was 37. He had three brothers and five sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company G, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died from his wounds received in battle on the morning of July 18, 1918, when the French (some of them colonial) and American forces between Fontenoy and Château-Thierry launched a counter-assault under the overall direction of Allied généralissime Ferdinand Foch against the German positions. His current burial is unknown. His name is inscribed on the Cantigny monument as PVT J MORIARITY.
