Tobias C. "Tobe" Cope, aged 42, was born on August 18, 1876 in Sparta, White County, Tennessee. He was a career soldier stationed at Fort Thomas at the beginning of the war. A member of the 371st Infantry, he received the Distinguished Service Cross for heroism at Tries Farm, France, on Sept. 30, 1918. During that battle, he suffered an arm wound but continued to lead his men, refusing to be evacuated. He later died in France of an infection from a wound. He is now buried in the Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate, Campbell County, Kentucky, USA.
