When Wirt Rhodes was born on April 1, 1894, in Grattan, Michigan, his father, George, was 32 and his mother, Rose, was 27. He married Mabel M Hively on April 6, 1916, in Ionia, Michigan. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company M, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was declared "Missing in Action" on May 29, 1918 and is commemorated on Tablets of the Missing, Somme American Cemetery, Bony, France.
