When Abraham James Shellenbarger was born on October 14, 1894, in Beaver City, Nebraska, his father, Lorenzo, was 22 and his mother, Vinetta, was 16. He had three brothers and two sisters. He entered the military service in Montana. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Corporal in Company M, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died from his wounds received in battle on May 9, 1918 and is now buried in Somme American Cemetery, Bony, France. His name is inscribed on the Cantigny monument as PVT A SHELLENBERG.
