When Joseph William Welsh was born on November 13, 1894, in Greensburg, Indiana, his father, John, was 59 and his mother, Mary, was 39. He had three brothers. He enlisted in the Army on April 16, 1917 at Greensburg. He was sent to Douglas, Arizona and was assigned to Company G, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He embarked for overseas in June 1917. He fought at Sommerville, Toul, Cantigny and Chateau-Theirry. He died from his wounds received in battle on May 6, 1918 and is now buried in South Park Cemetery, Greensburg, Decatur County, Indiana, USA .
