When Frank J. McKernan was born in May 1894, his father, John, was 26 and his mother, Mary, was 22. He entered the military service in Pennsylvania. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Sergeant in Company C, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 18, 1918 and is now buried in Oise-Aisne American Cemetery, Seringes-et- Nesles, France.
