When Lowell S Leytham was born in 1899 in Shelby, Iowa, his father, Thomas, was 47 and his mother, Anne, was 41. He had four brothers and five sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private First Class in Company K, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died from his wounds received in battle on July 24, 1918 and is now buried in Aisne-Marne American Cem., Belleau, France. His name is inscribed on the Buzancy monument as PVT L S LAYTHEM CO K.
