When Leon E. Hovencamp was born on December 14, 1894, his father, Martin, was 22 and his mother, Minnie, was 18. He had four brothers and three sisters. He entered the military service in New York. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company C, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was declared "Missing in Action" on July 21, 1918 and is commemorated on Tablets of the Missing, Aisne-Marne American Cemetery, Belleau, France.
