Matthew J. Coessens was born on January 16, 1900. He enlisted in the Army on May 18, 1917. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company A, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 18, 1918 at Villiers in France at the age of 18 and is now buried in Saint Mary's Cemetery, Fort Johnson, Montgomery County, New York, USA.
