When Horace S. Layser was born on August 9, 1900, his father, Jonathan, was 25 and his mother, Polly, was 22. He lost his mother when he was only 4 years old. He had two brothers and one sister. He entered the military service in Pennsylvania. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company A, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 18, 1918 and is now buried in Oise-Aisne American Cemetery, Seringes-et- Nesles, France.
