Claude L. Chastain was born in 1893 in Oregon County, Missouri, the son of Anna and Charles. He had two brothers and three sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company D, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action but declared "Missing" on July 21, 1918 and is memorialized on Tablets of the Missing, Aisne-Marne American Cemetery, Belleau, France. His name is inscribed on the Buzancy monument as a Private First Class.
