When Irving Ashley was born in January 1898 in Wisconsin, his father, Joseph, was 50 and his mother, Phoebe, was 43. He had three brothers and three sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company E, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 18, 1918 and is now buried in Silver Lake Cemetery, Portage, Columbia County, Wisconsin, USA. His name is inscribed on the Buzancy monument as PVT E ASHLEY.
