When Karl Markette Hooker was born on April 7, 1895, in Rowan, North Carolina, his father, John, was 36 and his mother, Anna, was 32. He had three brothers and two sisters. He entered the military service in Virginia. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Sergeant in Company F, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action but declared "Missing" on July 18, 1918 and is memorialized on Tablets of the Missing, Aisne-Marne American Cemetery, Belleau, France. He also has a cenotaph located in Mount Moriah Lutheran Church Cemetery, China Grove, Rowan County, North Carolina, USA.
