Nelson R. De La Ronde served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private First Class in Company F, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 23, 1918 and is now buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Portage, Wisconsin, USA.

A poster was made for his memorial, featuring an illustration of Columbia as a woman holding a piece of paper and knighting a kneeling soldier. Behind her is a large American flag, and behind it are standing soldiers. Poster text reads: "Columbia Gives Her Son the Accolade of the New Chivalry of Humanity. Nelson R. De La Ronde, Pvt., Co.
