When Otha Roland Downey was born on February 19, 1895, in Orange, Illinois, his father, Charles, was 22 and his mother, Rose, was 21. He had one brother and one sister. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private First Class in Company K, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 19, 1918 at the age of 22, in Picardie, France and is now buried in Ridgelawn Cemetery, Martinsville, Clark County, Illinois, USA.
