When Willie Wesley Shankle was born on September 26, 1896, in Norwood, North Carolina, his father, William, was 38 and his mother, Sara, was 33. He had three brothers and four sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Corporal in Company L, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 20, 1918, at the age of 21 due to an explosion in Picardie, France and is now buried in Oise-Aisne American Cemetery, Seringes-et- Nesles, France. A cenotaph for him is located in Norwood Cemetery, Norwood, Stanly County, North Carolina, USA.
