He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private First Class in Machine Gun Company, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 22, 1918 and is now buried in Oise-Aisne American Cemetery, Seringes-et- Nesles, France. His name is listed on a plaque on Memorial Stadium - 1922 in Kansas State Agricultural College, Manhattan, KS.
