When Finn L. Nelson was born on August 5, 1880, his father, Andrew, was 40 and his mother, Gertrud, was 35. He had three brothers and two sisters. He entered the military service in Nebraska. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Machine Gun Company, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died from his wounds received in battle on July 22, 1918 and is now buried in Aisne-Marne American Cem., Belleau, France.
