When Johnie Nolen was born in January 1897 in Kentucky, his father, Luke, was 53 and his mother, Bettie, was 36. He had one brother and one sister. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private First Class in Company B, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 18, 1918 and is now buried in Hensley Holiness Church Cemetery, Hensley, Clay County, Kentucky, USA. His name is inscribed on the Buzancy monument as PFC J NOLAN.
