When Howard Armstrong was born on January 27, 1889, in Frankfort, Kentucky, his father, William, was 22 and his mother, Laura, was 19. He married Ethel C. Madden on May 4, 1914, in Wayne, Indiana. They had one child during their marriage.

"Son of William and Laura Armstrong; born January 27, 1891, Richmond, Ind. Baker. Entered service September 21, 1917, Richmond, Ind. Trained at Camp Taylor, Ky.; and Camp Shelby, Miss. Embarked June 11, 1918; transferred to Company F, 18th Infantry, 1st Division. Died from wounds July 21, 1918, received in Meuse-Argonne Sector. Buried at Soissons, France. Cited "for gallantry and especially meritorious service" by Commanding Officer of First Division. Survived by widow, Ethel Armstrong, and son, Richard."
