When August L. "Gussie" Adams was born on September 10, 1894, in Washington, Missouri, his father, James, was 41 and his mother, Agnes, was 38. He enlisted in the United States Army on June 12, 1913, served in the Mexican Border Defense in 1916. He served during World War I as a Sergeant in Company G, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on June 22, 1918 (at the age of 23) and is now buried in Stanton Cemetery, Stanton, Franklin County, Missouri, USA. His headstone shows that he is in 16th Infantry Regiment.
