When Rolla M. Newman was born in May 1896 in Illinois, his father, William, was 36 and his mother, Carrie, was 31. He had one brother. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Corporal in Company G, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 18, 1918 and is now buried in Oise-Aisne American Cemetery, Seringes-et- Nesles, France. His name is inscribed on the Buzancy monument under 18th Infantry Regiment.
