George Hayes was born on October 18, 1912, and served as a togglier on a B-17F "Flying Fortress," nicknamed "Damn Yankee," of the 545th Bomber Squadron, 384th Bombardment Group. He was killed on December 1, 1943, when his plane was shot down over Jabbeke, Belgium, while returning to England from a bombing run over Solingen, Germany.
