When Henry Frederick Schotte was born on September 28, 1894, in Amsterdam, New York, his father, Kuno, was 22 and his mother, Minnie, was 23. He had two brothers. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company K, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. Schotte met his death in the assault at Chateau Thierry, a shell bursting in the middle of a platoon of 32 men, killing all but eight on July 20, 1918. He is now buried in Green Hill Cemetery, Amsterdam, Montgomery County, New York, USA. His surname is inscribed on the Buzancy monument as Schette.
