August Karwelat, Jr. was born on September 4, 1893 in Thomas, Tucker County, West Virginia. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Corporal in Company M, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 18, 1918 in France (at the age of 24) and is now buried in Holy Cross Lutheran Cemetery, Collinsville, Madison County, Illinois, USA. His surname is inscribed on the Buzancy monument as Karmealt and as a Private First Class.
