When William Ewing Boone was born on January 13, 1892, in Los Angeles, California, his father, Howard, was 34 and his mother, Janet, was 29. He had one brother and one sister. He worked in life insurance before the war. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Second Lieutenant in the 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action in 1918 at Chateau Thierry in France and is now buried in Mt. Washington Cemetery, Independence, Jackson County, Missouri, USA.

He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and his citation reads as follows:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) William Ewing Boone, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, A.E.F., in displaying valorous leadership throughout two days of attack near Soissons, France, July 18 - 19, 1918. Lieutenant Boone was killed while charging enemy machine guns at the head of his platoon.
