When James T. Gomillion was born in May 1887 in Alabama, his father, John, was 25 and his mother, Ellen, was 34. He had three brothers and four sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Sergeant in Company D, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 20, 1918 (at the age of 31) and is now buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia, USA.
