When John Vernon Raaen was born on February 28, 1898, in Fingal, North Dakota, his father, Gunder, was 35 and his mother, Marthine, was 31. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private First Class in Company D, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 20, 1918 and is now buried in Oise-Aisne American Cemetery, Seringes-et- Nesles, France.
