Back to Search Result

Description:

Outside the cemetery, there is an information board commemorating American soldiers who died at Courneau military training camp during World War I.

Address:

Piste 214 , 33260 , La Teste-de-Buch , 33-Gironde , Nouvelle-Aquitaine , France

The site is situated on the outskirts about 9.6 km south side of La Teste-de-Buch center, located along Pistel 214 road. From the D112 and D256 roundabout, take the road going west or the Piste 214. You will reach the site after 800 meters. Created in July 1916, the national necropolis of La Teste de Buch, located in a place called Natus, contains the mortal remains of combatants who died in the hospital of the Courneau training camp, initially hosting colonial troops and then from 1917 foreign troops (Russian and American). Refurbished in 1928, this cemetery, located in a pine forest, contains the bodies of 956 Senegalese, 9 Russians, and 2 French infantrymen. Gradually falling into disrepair, this site has undergone major works. In 1967, the remains were exhumed and placed under a memorial-ossuary, offering its current appearance.
