Le Haute Addeville
Description:
The site has a plaque commemorating Second Lieutenant George E. Schmidt who was Killed in Action in the assault on the nearby farm during World War II. The Ferme Delaunay is significant due to its role during World War II as it was a key location in the D-Day invasion. During the events of June 6, 1944, the farmhouse and its surrounding area were involved in intense combat as American paratroopers from the 101st Airborne Division fought to secure the area against German defenses. The farmhouse was used as a base of operations and a defensive position by the German forces, and it was situated close to the key battlefields where American paratroopers, including those led by 2nd Lieutenant George E. Schmidt, engaged in crucial engagements to secure objectives and disrupt German lines. Today, Ferme Delaunay operates as a Normandy B&B and gîtes (holiday cottages), preserving its historical significance while serving as a place for visitors to stay and explore the rich history of the region. The farmhouse stands as a reminder of the fierce battles fought in the area and the broader context of the D-Day landings.
